Dogs of the Central Missouri Humane Society

Today was my first day as a photo volunteer for the Central Missouri Humane Society.
All of these dogs are available for adoption right now. I came in at 1:00 in the afternoon, and was given a list of roughly 25 new dogs to photograph for their website. It took me three hours, 3.8 gigs of memory, and a whole camera battery. But I got an afternoon full of puppy kisses, wagging tails, and happy faces. I already sent over about 75 frames for the website, (check cmhspets.org later in the week to see ALL THE PUPPIES), but for now I couldn't resist sharing some of my favorites.

Anyone who knows me knows I love dogs, but this wasn't really as fun as I was expecting. Mostly it was just sad. The humane society is a really stressful environment for most of these animals — they're confused, away from the homes they once knew, and being handled by complete strangers.  Some of the dogs were indifferent to me, many were scared. Actually, it was heartbreaking. The Humane Society does great work, and all I can hope is that each and every one of these sweet dogs gets adopted into a loving family. I plan to continue volunteering with CMHS for the rest of my time in Columbia.

Also, editing this post was crazy, there were so many hard decisions on pictures! I'll probably look at this edit tomorrow morning and hate it, but for now, I've been looking at these pictures for so long that it's time to do something else. Honestly.
Thanks for looking!

Dramatic Sportz

Anyone who tells you sports photography is easy is lying. But really, who would say such a thing?

This fall, I've photographed quite the variety of sports. And I make hundreds of really useless sports pictures. But every once and a while, I get something magic. Here are three of my favorite sports photos. Yesterday I toned them for my personal collection, so I thought I would share. They're quite dramatic, no? It's not really serious, just something I had a little fun with.

Enjoy!

Also, for anyone who is curious: the middle picture was created using in-camera multiple exposure. That means by changing one setting on my camera, three sequential images were overlaid to create one composite, similar to winding back film and exposing film that has already captured a picture. Though it would be possible, it was not created in photoshop.

Boone County Fair Society Horse Show Prep

On Thursday, I photographed some preparation for the Boone County Fair Society Horse Show. The weather was perfect, crisp but not cold, and the light was nice — overcast but not dark.  I love animals, so naturally this was something I really enjoyed shooting. If I could have, I would have gone back to watch/photograph the actual show, but my schedule didn't really allow it. This was almost better . . .  there was no formal "event" to distract me. I was forced to walk around, explore, and meet people. It was a great way to spend an hour on a Thursday. Just what I needed.  xx Kayla
